I guess I should thank all the Joy Division cultists for keeping the memory alive, because until a few weeks ago, I had never heard any of their music...at least consciously. But a few weeks ago, I looked them up on Youtube.
My first impression --no joke-- was an incredulous "People used to listen to this crap?"
This song did not connect with me at all. They look bored. The music sounds stringy and thin.
But then I saw a live performance. Yeah, it's weird, but wow.
That's the great thing about discovering "new" old bands. You have this whole discography to delve into.
Ignoring "Love Will Tear Us Apart" but totally digging "Transmission," I then found "Shadowplay."
I've probably listened to this song 100 times in the last three weeks.
Then I got stuck on "Day of the Lords."
And now I'm stuck on "Candidate." I've been trying to teach myself some of the basslines and then I'm going to talk my brother into learning the guitar parts. We'll bum some drummer off the backpages of the music paper and start a Joy Division tribute band.
