Movies I Want to See

The Last Circus

Not for the faint of heart, this Spanish movie looks delightfully twisted.

War Horse

I was skeptical. A boy and his horse. Stephen Spielberg. Even accounting for Spielberg's mature period, that sounds like a sappy disaster. But after watching the trailer, I'm not so sure about the disaster part.

Car Talk

I had to take my truck into the shop. It was "popping code," as they say. Turns out my DPFE sensor* wasn't pulling enough volts. Not the end of the world, but cost to repair?

* I have no idea what that is.

Dark Side of the Summer Blockbuster

I sincerely hope that Transformers 3 was every bit as enjoyable as all the people who lined up for last night's "midnight" showing hoped it would be.

It's been a trend in recent years for big movies to be released early. It's usually a trick to win the box office for that week. You want to beat all the other movies coming out that week, so you give yourself a couple of extra days of box office returns. It's sneaky, yeah, but it makes a certain amount of sense considering that the first week of release is usually what makes or breaks a movie profit-wise.

But this is getting ridiculous. Last night, there was such demand for the midnight shows that many theaters starting playing it at 9:00 PM. By the time Friday rolls around, Transformers will have been out for days.

Of course it's going to make more money than any other movie in release. It's been making money for twice as long!

Quote of the Day

Courtesy of Andrew Sullivan:
To say simply "I believe civil marriage is between a man and a woman" is not an argument. It's also irrelevant in six states and the nation's capital. You can believe what you want, but my marriage license is identical to any straight person's in both my residences. What you have to do is explain why you believe two gay people cannot and should not be married in terms beyond mere sectarian dogma. We live in a republic, not a church.

New York, New York

I shouldn't be telling you this, but I know a lady who was deprived of custody of her kids in divorce proceedings. She wasn't on drugs. She wasn't an alcoholic. She didn't have mental problems or a history of violence.

She was a lesbian.

Every time she petitioned the court to get custody of her two kids, the court denied her. Not because she was on drugs or booze, not because she was violent or crazy, but because she was a lesbian.

And I have to say, the injustice of that really pisses me off. Maybe more so because that was my Mom.
